mAGAzINe cOVer tAKE 2

This is our completed magazine front cover, of which features our film "Marmaldy". After receiving useful feedback from our teacher, we decided to add additional alterations and sub headings on the sides advertising other topics that will be covered in the magazines contents in order to address different readers preferences. The use of the cost of the magazine alongside the bar code in white font  is effective as it brings the realism to a magazine, however we also kept it a small font so that the price is not the advertised aspect of the magazine as it isn't very cheap we want our audience to immediately focus on what we are featuring.

We additionally added a brief quote spoken by the protagonist herself to the right of her. "Growing up is just finding out who you are and what you want" this complies and conforms to many coming of age dramas, also appealing to a younger audience through the audiences empathy to the character and quote, as it touches on the themes of growing up. Additionally suggesting that this may be what our protagonist is thinking in this very image as she looks into the distance. Social issues and being in touch with your feelings are very prominent representations in coming of age movies.

Editing Process Part 2

Editing Process Part 1 - Behind The Scenes

Here is just a brief clip of Luiza Paulielo getting stuck into editing our trailer. Throughout this process we used the software "Adobe Premier Pro CC 2015" of which I have developed my skills in throughout the years, self taught through online YouTube tutorials. This was a slight struggle for us when it came to asking our Teacher for help as he had been working with another Adobe pack. However we managed to pull through with the help of YouTube videos, and sitting down with my partner Luiza discussing ideas, and Learning new techniques.

Magazine Cover - Take 1 + Analysis

Here we have our first attempt on a magazine cover to promote the movie. We found a peculiar name to use as the magazine brand, using "Vivienne" makes the magazine sound like a generic fashion, media or arts magazine. We found a sleek font that would fit to the style of a magazine. We didn't want to go with the stereotypical magazine name and look, as we wanted to show that this movie was a big thing and open to a large audience.

Firstly, I took a photograph off of my Instagram that I had previously taken of the protagonist, which we then formatted into a magazine cover size. Once applying the Title "Vivienne" over the top,we decided to apply a slogan/ subheading which added to the cover. "The very best in culture and the arts" suggests that this is of a magazine brand that specialises in all things art and media. Applying the small details such as "issue 27" and the date of "January 27" conformed to that of a magazine cover, additionally making it seem more professional.

The main priority of the cover was to get the message across of promotion, we intended to "promote" the new movie to an audience, by having "Luiza Paulielo IS Marmalady" is engaging and hits the audience, its short and snappy, yet says a lot. To add the style of an "arts" magazine and also the youth in the character,i applied layers of paint brush strokes beneath "Luiza Paulielo" also creating a cleaner look.

I decided to stick with a specific colour scheme in attempt to increase its professional appearance, and to suit the character herself, and the magazine layout. We went for a simple approach on magazine cover writing by just adding a brief look into whats to come inside the mag. By using different colours on both "Exclusive" and "Eleanor" it creates emphasis and also pin-points the importance of the writing.

To improve, we would add additional writing on the front of the cover, for example, we could add a promotion and add to another feature length film beneath the brief writing we already have. This would conform more to the magazine cover, as of now it is mainly focused on "Marmalady" itself.

Influences to our Work

"The Text Scene"

The text scene was influenced through several teen movies, however none specifically. We thought out that by adding the animation of iMessage bubbles, typing, and receiving and delivered notifaction sounds, it would make the trailer look to a higher standard than just showing the typing footage. We took away the sound filmed through the camera as it was of a poor quality. and replaced this with the iPhone typing sound that we downloaded from Youtube, and additonally the text receive and deliver sound. We created the iMessage bubbles through Paint.Net by downloading the speech bubbles from Google images, and applying a layer of text over it.

"The Payed for Boyfriend"

The typical "Paying the popular guy to date your bestfriend" was influenced through several chick flicks such as "She's all That" in which the Jock was forced into a bet to get to nerdy girl to Homecoming, whereas we altered this to make it so the protagonist's bestfriend was the one who reinforced the idea of dating her, whilst being payed. This underlays with several coming of age movies where the protagonist and the bestfriend get into a fight due to the involvement with a cute boy.

Location Scouting and Research

One of the first locations we filmed in was at the West Wittering beach in Chichester. we filmed this over summer so we would get the best sunlight and weather to film in so that it looked natural. We chose this beach location oppose to others because it was the closest option for our ideal beach location. We wanted it to be a sandy beach, we did not want it to be overly crowded as it makes filming inconvenient. We also wanted the water to be as blue as possible. West wittering was the best option for us as it is a sandy beach it is very big therefore not as cramped with people as other rocky beaches such as Brighton and Portsmouth. It was also close enough so that we could travel there with in an hour and a half by car and still have enough time to film. We have included the images of the beach in the introduction of our trailer since we felt it portrays our film as playful and youthful. We used the blurry shots of the protagonist and her love interest at the beach this shot was taken efficiently. We did not have the problem of strangers in our caught in our shot the sun light was also very bright and shinning towards our direction. Over all we achieved our dream sequence in this scene with the help of our exotic looking location.

For Lola's household scenes we used our own homes to film in due to our low budget we took advantage of what we already had. We filmed in two of the bedrooms and also other parts of the house such as corridor and lounge. This was very convenient as we could film what ever time fitted us best and there was no expenses involved in this.when room lighting was too dim we used our led light to enhance the quality of the lighting in the scene.

Character Stereotyping

The "Mean Popular girl"

we usually find one of the prominent characters in coming of age films is the Popular girl that others admire and wish to be.This character is usually portrayed as powerful, independent, rebellious divas that are always concerned with their appearance. These stereotypes have been used several time in successful films such as the classic "Mean girls"  "Clueless" and "Duff". This is a stereotype Luiza and I have chosen to avoid on the solemn reason that it has been used a lot and is quite cliche.

The "Jock"

This character is usually sexualised and are presented as confident, rebellious, vain and attractive. They can be either glamorised or disliked in the movie.Sometimes the main character ends up falling for the bad boy who is actually a romantic inside for instance in the film "10 things I hate about you" but they can also be rejected at the end of the movie once the main character realises they're not worth it.

For Example "Clueless" We wanted to create a love interest in our movie that is not necessarily a rebellious bad boy but a popular character that obtains some of the bad boy qualities such as confidence and vanity.

The "GBF"

Gay best friends have recently become stereotypes for coming of age or even Chick flick films. They have become more acceptable in social groups and are usually portrayed as comical characters.
Patrick in "the perks of being a wallflower" is a important character who is best friends with the protagonist he conforms to the stereotype of being funny as he brings the majority of the humour to the film.

The "Nerd"

This character is usually glamorised in coming of age teen genres they tend to be the protagonist. We are made to sympathise with them as we notice their struggles with trying to fit in or receive validation by other people. The audience usually follows them on a journey as they either have a transition or they accept themselves and feel confident with themselves. This is shown in our protagonists in "Duff" "Mean girls" "she's all that" and many more. This is a stereotype we intended to portray through our main character Lola.
